The Neanderthal Trail

THE NEANDERTHAL TRAIL PROJECT

Archeological museum in Zagreb presented in 2009 an idea about connecting all archeological sites with Neanderthal culture into one cultural trail – „The Neanderthal trail“. Under leadership of Mr Sanjin Mihelic (archeologist and author of the project idea), multimedia project with the same name has been designed. In this way Croatian archaeological heritage will be presented in a new, modern and above all, interesting way. The final idea was to create a tourist product which could enable archeology experts and fans from all over the world to visit „The Neanderthal trail“ in Croatia.

The Neanderthal Trail is a new and original tourist and cultural attraction which includes many institutions and destinations: one Nature Park, two National Parks, six museums, seven archaeological sites with musterijen culture artefacts, six archaeological sites which are not connected with Neanderthals but are very interesting.

The key attraction on The Neanderthal Trail is definitely Museum of Krapina Neanderthals. Hidden and unknown destinations like  "Ljubacka kosa" and "Klicevica Big Cave" where findings were just began recently, will turn on expert's and archaeology fun's imagination. One of the most beautiful Croatia National Park, Plitvice lakes is included in the tour as well. For „sugar at the end“ sightseeing of Split and it's Diokletian Palace will be the tour Grand Finale.

Basic tour which connects almost all musterijen culture sites in Croatia consists of 8 days / 7 nights. But each of primary (Neanderthal) locations can be central point and with additional attraction can fulfil the whole micro – itinerary of 2-4 days.

The Neanderthal Trail is mainly suited for experts and archaeology fans and because of that each group has a tour leader who is archaeologist as well.

Goal and the concept of our tour the Neanderthal trail is to visit the most important locations throughout Croatia which have connection with Neanderthal culture. While we are on the tour, why not visit some of the interesting archaeological locations and natural and cultural sites which are nearby our main neanderthal path .
