Goal and the concept of our tour the Neanderthal trail is to visit the most important locations throughout Croatia which have connection with Neanderthal culture. While we are on the tour, why not visit some of the interesting archaeological locations and natural and cultural sites which are nearby our main neanderthal path .

Locations included in the tour:

  • The Neanderthal museum on Husnjakovo brdo, where, at the end of the 19th century many archaeological artifacts and neanderthal bones have been found
  • Cave Vindija, location of many archaeological neanderthal artifacts and bones findings
  • Cave Veternica, situated in the Park of nature Medvednica, in close vicinity of Zagreb, location of many archaeological artifacts including prehistoric animals from various geological eras
  • Ljubacka kosa nearby town Nin where only recently archaeological diggings have started. On the same location in a picturesque scenery there are remains of an old medieval fortress.
  • Velika pecina in Klicevica near Benkovac is completely new location where artifacts of Mousterian culture have been found and where serious archaeological diggings are about to start
  • Mujina cave above Trogir

Except the close related locations where the remains of Neanderthal man have been found you will be given an opportunity to visit museums and other interesting sites:

  • Archaeological museum in Zagreb,
  • National park Plitvicka jezera, one of the most beautiful national parks in the world, and of course, on the list of UNESCO’s World heritage. An interesting medieval fortress is located in the park itself, called Krcingrad.
  • Archaeological museum in Zadar,
  • City of Nin has been elected for the European destination of excellence 2009./2010
  • Ruins of the fortress on Bribirska glavica above Skradin
  • National park Krka
  • Museum of the town of Kastela located in an interesting castle Vitturi in Kastel Luksic, in which the archaeological findings from Mujina cave are being kept
  • Archaeological remains of the old roman town Salona (today’s Solin), nearby Split
  • Archaeological museum in Split, and
  • Museum of Croatian archaeological monuments in Split

For you to see, all what we have prepared for you, we have came up with one main and a couple of spin-off itineraries:

The neanderthal trail
8 days / 7 nights / fly in to Zagreb / fly out of Split

Dan 1. Fly in to Zagreb, transfer to hotel in center of Zagreb
Dan 2. Visit to cave Veternica. Continuing our trip towards Krapina and the Neanderthal museum
Dan 3. NP Plitvicka Jezera – archaeological location – medieval fortress Krcingrad
Dan 4. Ljubacka kosa and visit town of Nin. Velika pecina in Klicevica near Benkovac. Overnight in Zadar
Dan 5. Archaeological museum in Zadar and archaeological location Bribirska glavica near Skradin, evening walk in national park Krka
Dan 6. Mujina pecina, Museum of the town of Kastela and roman town Salona
Dan 7. Split visit to Diocletian palace; possible visit to Archaeological museum in Split and / or Museum of Croatian archaeological monuments.
Dan 8. Transfer Split – split airport to catch the flight home.

Dates in 2011:
23.04. – 30.04.2011. and 07.05. - 14.05.2011.
24.09. – 01.10.2011. and 08.10. – 15.10.2011.

SPIN-OFF ITINERARIES

Archaeological ‘city break’ in Zagreb
4 days / 3 nights / fly in and out of Zagreb
Dan 1. Fly in to Zagreb. Visit archaeological park Andautonia.
Dan 2. Visit cave Veternica, Park of nature Medvednica. Continuing our travel north towards Krapina. Visit Neanderthal museum.
Dan 3. Visit cave Vindija. Travel south towards Plitvicka Jezera. Walking through Plitvicka jezera and visiting an interesting medieval ruins of Krcingrad
Dan 4. Transfer to Zagreb – Zagreb Pleso airport to catch the flight home.

Archaeological ‘city break’ in Split
4 days / 3 nights / fly in and out of Split
Dan 1. Fly in to Split. Visit archaeological museum in Split.
Dan 2. Visit roman town Salona, near Split. Transfer to Kastela and visit the Museum of the town of Kastela located in an interesting castle Vitturi in Kastel Luksic. Continue our trip to Mujina Cave above Trogir. Visiting the cave and continue towards Skradin i Bribirska glavica. Visit the archaeological location Bribirska glavica. Evening walk in national park Krka.. Overnight in Skradin.
Dan 3. Departure for Benkovac and Velika pecina in Klicevica. Continuing towards Nin and visit archaeological location Ljubacka kosa. Nin and the museum of Nin Aantiquities. Overnight in Zaton or Zadar.
Dan 4. Transfer Zadar - split airport to catch the flight home.

It is possible to create spin-off itineraries with arrival to Zadar and/or Pula

Tours can be carried out with any number of participants.

Accommodation: tours are based in 3* or 4* hotels. It is possible to tailor the tour with more modest or more luxury accommodation (5*).

It is also possible to include more interesting tourist attractions which are not, at the moment, included in the main tour ˝The Neanderthal trail˝.
